Louis Trout, of Shooting the West and the Winnemucca Area Arts and Culture Coalition, recently thanked hospital board members for commissioning local art for display in the hospital's new medical office building. Trout noted that the hospital collection is the second largest display in Winnemucca, after the Winnemucca Fine Arts Gallery. Brandi Betancourt, pictured at left, was just one of 20 local artists who placed more than 200 photographs and art pieces in the new building.

The Winnemucca Host Lions Club was the center of a bidding war recently-a friendly struggle between HGH and Hycroft Resources and Development, Inc. that netted the club $1,800. The charitable feud took place at "Festival of Trees," held November 23-25. HGH and Hycroft each took turns winning the Hycroft tree and then donating it back to the club.  Finally, $1,300 later, the tree was bid on by a private party, who added another $500 to the tally.

Humboldt General Hospital was a proud sponsor of an NBA D-League contest that was held at Lowry High School Monday, November 19. The Reno Bighorns faced off against the Idaho Stampede during the preseason exhibition game. Chad Peters, Lowry High School's varsity boys' basketball coach (pictured at left) was instrumental in helping the two teams connect. "We love the idea of having professional basketball showcased out here for all the rural kids to experience," he said.

In November, Humboldt General Hospital EMS Rescue welcomed two new rigs to its fleet: a rescue/extrication unit that was retrofitted from a fire engine body, and the long-haul ground transport unit pictured at left. Over the past several years, since EMS launched its Critical Care Ground Transport Program, crew members completed hundreds of transports to Reno hospitals at a huge time and cost savings to patients.

Thirteen senior students from Lowry High School attend class at the HGH EMS Rescue station where their ultimate goal will be to pass the National Registry EMT exam by summer 2013. The collaborative program is a first for HGH and the Humboldt County School District, but Superintendent Dave Jensen hopes it won't be the last. "This class is a perfect fit with our Career and Technical Education component," said Dr. Jensen.

Several members of Humboldt General Hospital's nursing team have volunteered to take on the task of training new nurses. The nurse preceptors, as they are called, not only carry their own heavy load each day, but they also shoulder the responsibility of showing their trainee nurses the ropes. Pictured, from left to right, are: Nurse Educator Tina Maestrejuan, Kat Esquivel, Marsha Foreman, Robin Dunckhorst and Mary Schlotzhauer, all registered nurses.

Flavio Herrera, pictured at left, is a permanent fixture at the Poke & Peek Thrift Shop where he spends most of his time in a small back room washing dishes and making small repairs. The "pink ladies" and their gentlemen counterparts, like Flavio, are members of the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary, which had donated over $2 million to the hospital since its inception in 1968. Flavio's daughter, Bertha Higbee, is a nurse at Humboldt General Hospital and was named the 2012 "Employee of the Year."

HGH EMS Rescue was honored by Newmont's Twin Creeks Mine as an "emergency response partner" during the October 23 hospital board meeting for responding quickly and efficiently to an accident involving a contractor at the mine. Pictured above are Newmont External Relations Manager Rhonda Zuraff, HGH EMS Rescue Director Pat Songer, HGH EMT-I Tori Stephens, HGH Paramedic Lacy Constable and Newmont General Manager of Operations for Twin Creeks/Midas Mark Evatz.
