Making the decision to move a loved one to a nursing home is one of life's most difficult decisions. Not only it is emotionally distressing, but in most cases it is a process people know nothing about. The following are some of the most frequently asked questions. Understanding the process and knowing where to go for help hopefully will make the painful process a little easier.

Q. How do I pay?

A. Medicare only pays for nursing home care in special circumstances. This is a common misunderstanding and something that most people find quite shocking. The only way to pay for long term care is privately, with specific long term care insurance, with Medicaid (state assistance) or a combination of thse. Veterans benefits only pay for nursing care in a VA facility.

Q. Do we have to see a doctor to have a physical and get an order for a nursing home?

A. This is not necessary; however, any recent medical records that you can provide to us are beneficial for us to understand the type of care your loved one needs.

Q. How much does it cost?

A. The cost per day is $230. This includes 24-hour care by nurses, nursing assistants, as well as access to a primary care physician, a pharmacist, a dietitian, a restorative care aide, a social worker, and physical and occupational therapy if needed. This is an all-inclusive cost. The only cost above and beyond this are the medications and personal items, such as a cell phone or specialty type hygiene supplies.

Q. Is there a waiting list?

A. Currently there is a waiting list for men and for women. This varies over the course of time. Patients that are in the acute care hospital who need nursing home placement are given priority over those on the waiting list.

Q. How do I get my loved one on the waiting list?

A. Call the nursing home to request an Admission Intake Packet, complete the forms and return them to Harmony Manor. We ask that you call monthly to communicate that you want to stay on the list.

Q. If I am on the list but decline the bed when it becomes available, do I drop to the bottom of your list?

A. No. It goes by the date that you put your name on the list.

Q. Can I leave the facility once I go in?

A. Yes, residents can go on outings, for visits or spend time with their family and friends outside of the facility at any time. Overnight stays are permitted on occasion.

Q. Will I keep my own doctor?

A. You can if he or she has admitting privileges with the hospital and agrees to follow your care in the nursing home. If not, Dr. Robbie Grant will be your primary care physician.

Q. What can I bring in to the nursing home with me?

A. We want to create as much of a home-like environment as possible, so any personal items, including pictures, a special chair or bedspread, can be brought in.

Q. What are the visiting hours?

A. Since this is considered your home, your visitors can come at any time of the night or day.
