Billing FAQs

Q: How much do I really owe?
A: After your insurance company has reviewed your hospital bill and paid or denied their portion (a process that can take several months), the hospital will bill you for your part of the bill. Your hospital bill will show charges for whatever your insurance does not pay. Most insurance plans require patients to pay part of their hospital bill. If you have questions about your insurance, please contact your insurance company.

Q: Who will bill my insurance?
A: Our hospital and our affiliates will bill your insurance company if you have provided the correct insurance information.

Q: What If I cannot pay?
A: If you need help to meet your financial obligations at Humboldt General Hospital, please call our Patient Access to Healthcare department at (775) 623-5222, ext. 533. Among the ways HGH can help are:

  • Charity Care Program
    Humboldt General Hospital’s Charity Care Program may be able to help if you do not have health insurance, you have health insurance but high deductibles and co-pays still create a financial hardship, you are not eligible for Medicaid, and/or you meet criteria for financial assistance. All decisions for assistance are based on family size and household income. Please click here for more information.
  • Insurance Programs
    Humboldt General Hospital can help you apply for public insurance programs such as Medicaid and Nevada Check Up. These programs may help you with your current bill and will help you pay for your health needs in the future.
  • Self-Pay Discount
    Humboldt General Hospital provides all self-pay patients with a 10 percent discount.
  • Payment Plans
    If you need to pay your bill over time, Humboldt General Hospital can help you set up an appropriate payment plan.
  • Access to Healthcare Network
    Humboldt General Hospital has partnered with Access to Healthcare Network (AHN). AHN is a one-stop solution for Nevadans who don't have health coverage. The group has an extensive network of local doctors, hospitals and healthcare providers who all offer their services at vastly reduced rates to AHN members. Members pay AHN a low cost membership fee, and they pay the provider the discounted rate at the time of their appointment. AHN also offers discounted maternity, dental and vision services. AHN is not health insurance but rather links individuals and families to healthcare programs and community resources throughout Nevada. Q: Why does hospital care cost so much?
A: The answer is complex. As with any business, hospitals must attempt to cover their expenses by charging for their services. But with hospitals, the cost of providing services includes many necessary and costly items that do not readily come to mind when most of us think about our care. We take it for granted that the hospital is there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Likewise, we have come to expect that hospitals will have all the latest technology that could possibly be needed for our care. And we expect that the people caring for us are highly trained, highly skilled professionals. Finally, although we seldom think about it, the health care world is unique in that those who can pay for services they use are asked to help pay for the care of others who cannot or will not pay.

Q: Why did I receive a separate lab, doctor or radiology bill?
A: Within our hospital, there are many separate businesses with their own billing and accounting procedures. Humboldt General Hospital bills for the care it provides, and so does each separate company. If you have questions regarding the groups that regularly provide care for patients at our hospital and from whom you might receive a bill, please call the HGH billing office at (775) 623-5222, ext. 200.

Q: Why did I receive a bill from a doctor I did not see?
A: Hospitals often consult with specialized doctors as part of caring for patients. Often these specialists are sent items such as lab tests or X-rays for their expert review. You will receive a bill directly from those doctors for their work.

Q: What if my hospitalization is the result of an accident?
A: If you had a non-work related accident, the hospital will ask you for information about other insurance, like car insurance. If your accident or illness is work-related, the hospital will bill your employer's workers' compensation program. You must fill out the paperwork they need.
