Humboldt County's First Baby of the New Year Born at HGH

For being such a tiny baby, Zoey Rae Lindeman sure made a big impression last week.

Zoey is Humboldt County's first baby of the New Year. She was born at 10:54 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, weighing in at just 5 pounds, 6 ounces and measuring 18 inches long.

Dr. Sharon E. McIntyre delivered the baby girl at Humboldt General Hospital after Melissa Heikkila spent a long night in labor. She wasn't due until January 14, but following a December 31 doctor's appointment and her mounting blood pressure, Melissa said Dr. McIntyre said the baby needed to come out.

And little Zoey obliged.

"December 31 is my birthday," said Melissa, "so I found out on my birthday that I was going to have the baby a little earlier than expected."

With some ups and downs in the pregnancy, dad Larry Lindeman said the name Zoey, which means "life," seemed completely appropriate.

"She picked it out," he said of Melissa, "but I snatched onto it and it's a perfect fit."

Zoey Rae is the couple's first child.

Maternal grandparents are Susan and Willie Copeland of Winnemucca, and Tom Heikkila of Ishpeming, Michigan. Paternal grandparents are David and Linda Lindeman of Winnemucca.

Maternal great grandparents are Mary and Larry Farmer; Mary and the late Raymond Helsten; and Gail and the late Robert Heikkila.

Paternal great grandparents are the late Beverly and Robert Lindeman; and Arliss and Madalene Shiley.

Melissa expressed her gratitude at having a healthy baby girl. Zoey gave Melissa a run for her money, though, producing voluminous amounts of heartburn, and requiring blood thinner shots every day. As the pregnancy progressed, Melissa also did twice-weekly stress tests.

"But it went by pretty quickly," she said of her pregnancy, though labor seemed a little more drawn out. "Not for me," laughed Larry. "I slept in the chair all night."

"And snored," quipped Melissa.

Melissa and Larry will enjoy a bounty of gifts from area organizations and businesses that did their part to celebrate Zoey Rae's birth.

The family will receive a $100 check from the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary, an all-volunteer organization whose members operate the Poke N' Peek Thrift Shop as well as lend daily assistance at the hospital.

Additionally, the Humboldt County CattleWomen will present the baby with a gift certificate for $25 in beef.

The OB nurses at Humboldt General Hospital, led by Kathryn Esquivel, R.N., also gathered the following gifts from area businesses: Second Street Seasonals – baby blanket; Shoreline – teddy bear sweatshirt; Serenity Spa – facial gift certificate; The Winnemucca Inn - $50 gift certificate; Attitudes Hair Salon – hair cut gift certificate; Simply Trendy – hair clips, a hair feather and baby necklace; and Boot Barn – George Strait CD, stuffed pony, bandana and disposable camera.

The HGH OB Department also donated a diaper bag and diapers. That's in addition to the wide array of other gifts, samples and supplies the hospital staff showers on each new baby.
