Humboldt General Hospital Partners with Coalition for Memorial Golf Tourney

Humboldt General Hospital partnered with a local nonprofit last week to help support a healthy local community.

Friday, August 16, Humboldt General Hospital CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish presented the Frontier Community Coalition with a check for $1,000.

The Frontier Community Coalition's mission is to prevent or reduce alcohol and substance abuse and other problem behaviors in the Humboldt, Lander and Pershing county communities.

Most coalition funding is grant-based, but because the group's needs are increasing while grant funds are decreasing, two of the group's board members, Sandy Curutchet and Jane Ripley, asked the hospital for a donation to help underwrite their second annual Louie Peraldo Memorial Golf Tournament on August 17, 2013.

Peraldo, who passed away in 2008, was the former chairman of the coalition and the charter chairman of the Juvenile Advisory Board for 40 years.

"It's always fun when Humboldt General Hospital makes a donation to one of our great community causes," said HGH CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish, "but Friday's donation to the Frontier Community Coalition was extra special."

Parrish noted that when Curutchet initially approached the hospital, she simply asked for any kind of donation, from money to a product for the group's silent auction or raffle.

When she mentioned that the coalition was looking to help fund a luncheon associated with the golf tournament, HGH offered $500. But then, Parrish said he later learned that $500 was not enough to cover the group's luncheon.

Parrish said the hospital discussed the matter and opted to cut the check for $1,000, a surprise move that was met by tears and hugs from the two women on Friday.

"It was really a fun, special moment," said Parrish. "We were really glad to help."

Parrish said Friday's check presentation also helped the hospital and coalition realize how much they have in common in terms of wanting to support local youth and curb the spread of underage drinking, substance abuse, venereal diseases, health-related issues and more.

"We make a great partnership and we're excited to continue to work with the coalition in the future to support a healthy community," said Parrish.

The Frontier Community Coalition is a major funder of such programs as Tri-County Project Magic for high-risk youth, the Parenting Project, Diabetes Self-Management education, Responsible Beverage Server Training, Longhorn Youth Team, Zion's Afterschool Youth Center, Youth Career Fair, Life is Good Girls Group, Lowry High School Academic Assembly, Tri-County Foster Care Training and Assistance, Jacob's Well Youth Center in Battle Mountain, Tri-County Drug Free Graduation and the Peer Counseling Training Project.
