Women's Choice Award Honors Harmony Manor

Harmony Manor Skilled Nursing Facility has been named one of America's Best Nursing Homes for women.

Humboldt General Hospital's long-term care facility recently learned that it received the

Women's Choice Award® from WomenCertified® distinguishing it as one of the 2013 America's Best Nursing Homes for Patient Experience.

This award designation is based on robust criteria that include female patient satisfaction measurements as well as clinical excellence considerations.

"Our Harmony Manor family is dedicated to creating a home for our patients where exceptional care, dignity and compassion are our uncompromising standard," said Humboldt General Hospital CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish. "We are honored to be a 2013 Best Nursing Homes award recipient."

WomenCertified® is a marketing research firm and the home of the Women's Choice Award, The Voice of Women. The Women's Choice Award is the first national award based on the recommendations and preferences of women.

Awards are based on surveys of thousands of women, as well as research conducted in partnership with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania on what drives the consumer experience for women versus men.

Delia Passi, CEO and Founder of WomenCertified said, "We are proud of Harmony Manor Skilled Nursing Facility for taking ownership of their patient experience and creating an environment that offers the best in long term healthcare services."

Passi continued, "As the average lifespan increases and larger numbers of older adults require care, a family's decision can be made easier by knowing the facilities that other women highly recommend."

Passi said nursing homes qualify for this highly selective annual list based on an objective proprietary scoring process. The selection process begins with the 5 star rating system from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services rating three major elements: health inspections, nurse staffing, and quality of care.

Weighting is then applied that reflects women's preferences and priorities. In addition, any facility with serious deficiency reports is eliminated from consideration.

According to Harmony Manor Nurse Manager Robin Gillis, "Our goal has always been to be a five star facility because those five stars indicate that we are providing the best quality of life that we can for our residents."

She added, "We strive to be survey ready on any given day. We always want to be caring for our residents at that level."

Parrish said the entire Harmony Manor operation, from nurses to nurses' aides, housekeeping and dietary staff and the activities staff, is focused on making residents' stays as pleasant and rewarding as possible.

He continued, "This isn't about simply providing housing and medical care for people; it's about providing a quality of life that engages residents and helps them continue to grow and enjoy life while safeguarding their health, dignity and privacy."

Parrish added, "This rewarding environment is especially meaningful to women who have singled out Harmony Manor as one of the nation's best nursing homes."

Gillis, who has supervised the facility for over six years, said she is deeply appreciative for what's happening at Harmony Manor—success that she wholeheartedly attributes to her staff.

"I am most proud of the staff that we have. It just takes a certain individual to work with geriatrics," she said. "My staff is here because they want to be; they truly care about the residents. I can see it in every one of them."
