CNA Schirrick Nominated for Nationwide Scholarship Award

A nursing assistant at Harmony Manor Skilled Nursing Facility is up for one of the country's most prestigious awards thanks to her biggest fans—her co-workers.

Holly Schirrick has been nominated for the 2015 Nursing Assistant of the Year Scholarship Award. If she wins, she will enjoy a $3,000 scholarship to be applied toward nursing school, as well as an all-expenses-paid trip to the American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators Annual Conference in New Orleans on May 8.

The scholarship program is sponsored by Cerner Extended Care in partnership with the AANAC. According to the group's website, the nationwide award is meant to single out Certified Nursing Assistants who demonstrate a dedication to care of the residents, a great attitude, a willingness to go beyond the call of duty and a desire to pursue an education in nursing.

According to Harmony Manor Nursing Manager Robin Gillis, Schirrick certainly fits that description on all counts.

"I think to be nominated and to be preliminarily accepted in a nationwide group is outstanding," said Gillis. "Holly deserves recognition for this nomination, which she has more than earned by being an exemplary CNA and employee!"

Schirrick was initially nominated for the honor by fellow CNA Marlas Prevo. Unbeknownst to Schirrick, Prevo submitted a detailed nomination describing Schirrick's great attitude, strong work ethic and, above all, her sincere dedication to Harmony Manor's residents.

That was followed by a long telephone interview between Gillis and organization officials. Based on those two levels of nomination, Schirrick was accepted into the preliminary round of the competition.

"And she so deserves it," said co-worker Beverly Shell, RN. "I wish we had 10 of her. She has such a good attitude; the residents are always number one with her."

Schirrick has worked at Harmony Manor since September 2011; she is a 2009 graduate of Lowry High School.

After securing her nursing assistant certification post high school, Schirrick began chipping off the prerequisites that will allow her to apply to the Bachelor of Science in nursing program at Great Basin College in Elko; she hopes to begin those studies in fall 2015.

In the meantime she will continue to perform her CNA duties with the same enthusiasm and love she has demonstrated over the past three years.

"I really love working with the residents," said Schirrick. "I have relationships with each one."
