LaRena's Race Invites Community to Help 'Spook Cancer'

Friday, October 30, young cowboys and cowgirls will do their part to “Spook Cancer” during a special “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” arena performance at the Western States Ranch Rodeo Association Finals.

In all, 14 youngsters will take to the arena at the Winnemucca Event Center in an effort to raise funds for area cancer fighters.

During their performance, each young cowboy/cowgirl will be clad in pink or a costume to ride for someone they know who has experienced the trauma of cancer.

After, the youth will hit the stands to sell tickets for an iPad, Twisted X Shoes, and various other items, or simply “trick or treat” for the cancer cause.

The “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” campaign was founded in 2004 for rodeos and Western events to promote breast cancer awareness and fundraise locally.

The La Rena Smith Bengoa Run, Ride or Walk for the Cure (now called LaRena’s Race) was established in 2003 and has assisted Humboldt and Lander County residents with monetary help as they battle cancer.

This year the two campaigns have joined in an effort to increase awareness of breast cancer and other cancers, while raising money to help local people who are receiving treatment.

Friday’s riders will include Will and Prairie Wolverton; Sean and Sam Bengoa; Jette and Kole Black; Tyann Kern; Addison Tregellas; Tessa Rodriguez; Taylor and Cooper Hill; and Rylee, Reese, and Chasen Wilkinson.

Last year, LaRena’s Race helped 34 local people by dispensing a total of $51,000. So far this year, the group has assisted over 20 cancer fighters; the group projects it will meet or exceed last year’s tallies.

Friday night’s rodeo finals performance of the WSRRA will begin at 6 p.m. at the Winnemucca Event Center. All community members are invited to attend and help “Spook Cancer.”

Those who wish to donate to the LaRena’s Race campaign prior to October 30 may call Lindsey Tregellas at (775) 304-2977.

Alternatively, donations may be made to the LaRena's Race account at any Wells Fargo Bank.
