Darlene Bryan Assumes Duties as Hospital Interim Administrator

January 1, Humboldt General Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Darlene Bryan will add a new title to her resume: interim hospital administrator.

Bryan will take over duties from HGH CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish who stepped down from the facility December 31.

It’s a position that’s fairly familiar to Bryan: she was the interim when Administrator Byron Quinton left Humboldt General Hospital in 2003. At that time, she played double duty between her job as chief nursing office and interim administrator.

According to estimates, Bryan will once again assume the dual roles for anywhere from 90 to 120 days until a replacement CEO can be found.

While there isn’t much wiggle room in her already full schedule, Bryan said she will rely on department heads and nursing leaders for help. She said she is also counting on staff members to “just keep doing their jobs.”

“There are great employees here that know how to do their jobs, so we should be just fine,” she said.

Bryan, a Winnemucca native, has been a nurse for 34 years—the lion’s share of those at Humboldt General Hospital. As chief nursing officer, she oversees a staff of 75 staff members along with the requisite administrative duties.

Even though her first love is patient care, she said she saw an opportunity to calm the waters at HGH earlier this year by offering her services as interim administrator.

“When we found out we were going to lose our CEO, there was an understandable wave of panic that kind of engulfed the facility,” said Bryan. “I felt like I could help; the staff is familiar with me and I felt I could provide a sense of calm moving forward,” she said.

Bryan also wished to alleviate concerns over cost. Interim administrators can be very expensive, she explained, noting that one candidate cost $41,000 a month—not including housing and travel—and only wanted to be on site four days a week. “That’s not what we need,” she said.

Bryan feels confident in her ability to lead the hospital operation for as long as it takes to find the right person.

That being said, she does not want the job permanently.

“I enjoy working with patients and with the nurses and physicians,” she said. “That is where my heart is.”
