Humboldt General Hospital Diabetes Education Classes Continue in 2017

Humboldt General Hospital’s program aimed at helping people “live well” with diabetes is now accepting participants for one of seven class sessions in 2017.

Humboldt General Hospital's Nutritional Services Department will offer its “Living Well with Diabetes” education program on the following days: Thursdays, January 26 and February 2; Tuesdays March 14 and March 21; Wednesdays, April 26 and May 3; Tuesdays June 6 and June 13; Thursdays, August 31 and September 7; Tuesdays, October 17 and October 24; and, Thursdays, November 30 and December 7.

All classes will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Humboldt General Hospital. Lunch is provided. Participants may choose to invite one guest to participate in the instruction.

The 10- to 13-hour comprehensive education program covers topics such as disease risks, monitoring blood sugar, creating meal plans, remaining active, managing medications and more.

Those who are interested in the “Living Well with Diabetes” education program should call their primary care physician for a referral.

According to HGH Nutrition Services Director/Licensed Dietitian Tiffani Nalivka, diabetes education is a collaborative process in which people with or who are at risk for diabetes gain the knowledge and skills they need to modify their behavior for maximum health.

“Living with a chronic condition can be very challenging,” said Nalivka, “so our goal is to help people create a self-management plan that will help them truly live well.”

Instruction is delivered to patients with diabetes on a one-and-one and small-group basis. The program is covered by most insurance; for those who don't have insurance, the hospital may be able to provide financial assistance.

Class times and dates may be subject to change. Nalivka said the program may also be available in Spanish, pending a sufficient number of referrals.

For more information, please contact Tiffani Nalivka at (775) 623-5222, ext. 1756, or email nalivkat@hghospital.org. Participants are encouraged to register early as class space is limited.
