Humboldt General Hospital Welcomes Two New Resident Physicians

The Family Medicine Residency Program at Humboldt General Hospital has welcomed two new Resident Physicians.

Dr. Rodney Sholty and Dr. Christopher Vlasek joined the local facility’s medical staff July 1; Dr. Samaan Sattarzadeh, the program’s lead Physician Resident in Winnemucca, has been at the HGH Family Medicine Residency Clinic since it opened in July 2015.

The clinic is the culmination of a long collaboration between HGH and the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

With the opening, Winnemucca has become the first rural family medicine residency site in Nevada, and now Dr. Sholty and Dr. Vlasek have become the second and third doctors to join as Resident Physicians.

Dr. Sholty, a Southern California native, began his medical career as a paramedic and then registered nurse and flight nurse—careers which eventually led him to complete his medical degree. Dr. Sholty said he is excited to complete his residency in family medicine. His plans for the future include serving rural communities in Nevada as well as providing medical support to local law enforcement agencies and EMS systems.

Dr. Vlasek was born and raised in Reno. He attended Bakersfield College for two years before earning a biology degree from the University of Nevada, Reno. While at UNR, Dr. Vlasek was inspired by the interactions he saw between physicians and their patients, which led him to pursue a career in medicine.

Dr. Vlasek said he realized early on that family medicine would allow him to make the greatest impact on his patients. He said he is especially excited to be part of the Family Medicine Residency Program to make an impact on his home state. Outside of medicine, Dr. Vlasek tries to spend as much time as he can on the jujitsu mat, playing the guitar, and enjoying an occasional round of golf.

Dr. Sholty and Dr. Vlasek completed their first year of specialization in family medicine in Las Vegas and will complete years two and three in Winnemucca. They are employed by the School of Medicine but both see patients at the HGH Family Medicine Residency Clinic.

While the Family Medicine Residency Program currently has three Resident Physicians, starting in 2017, the program will expand to four total Resident Physicians on site. Humboldt General Hospital’s maximum capacity is four physicians.

The Family Medicine Residency Clinic offers the same well-known personal care patients have come to expect from HGH, with the convenience of appointment and/or walk-in visits. Care is available from pre-natal through end of life.

The clinic is located upstairs in the new Rural Health Clinic at Humboldt General Hospital. Patients are encouraged to use the new underground parking garage (use the Mizpah Street entrance) and take the elevator to the second-floor clinic.

Patients also may access the clinic via the hospital’s main entrance by following the “Rural Health Clinic” signs until they reach the second-floor clinic.
