Humboldt General Lunchtime Seminar Will Focus on 'Slip, Trip, Fall' Prevention

Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury-related death for adults age 65 and older?

That’s according to Injury Facts 2017, the statistical report on unintentional injuries created by the National Safety Council. In fact, more than 33,000 people died from falls last year, and the vast majority of them were over age 65.

Still, while it’s true that older adults are more at risk for falls, anyone can slip, trip or fall and experience initial injury followed by limited activity, reduced mobility, loss of fitness and a fear of falling.

That’s the bad news; the good news is falls are preventable.

From noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 15, Occupational Therapist Christine Davis will discuss some of the underlying causes of falls such as muscle weakness, medications that cause dizziness, improper footwear, impaired vision, slick floors, poor lighting, loose rugs, clutter and uneven surfaces—and how to prevent injury.

The “Slip, Trip, Fall: How to Avoid Injury” seminar will take place in the Sarah Winnemucca Conference Room at Humboldt General Hospital. There is no charge to attend and lunch will be served.

For more information, please contact HGH Community Education and Development Director Nicole Maher at (775) 761-2624 or email at nicole@hghospital.org.
