KTVN on HGH

A few months back, KTVN was in town to produce a story about the LaRena Smith Bengoa Run, Ride or Walk for the Cure. While Jeff Foss was on campus, he also got some footage of the HGH EMS Rescue station in anticipation of producing a story on HGH's contract to provide medical services at Burning Man. Jeff contacted us last week and said the story was ready to go. While KTVN didn't load a link to this story's video footage on its site, the transcript follows.

Hospital Contracted for Medical Emergencies at Burning Man

Posted: Aug 22, 2013 4:56 PM PST Updated: Aug 22, 2013 6:08 PM PST

During Burning Man medical emergencies happen, and crews from Humboldt General Hospital in Winnemucca are there to save lives.

"It's just like any other city. We provide a 911 service to them along with a clinic aspect in the sense of a critical access hospital," says Pat Songer.

Burning Man came to the hospital to ask them to contract for the festival. They agreed so they could buy new equipment for Winnemucca and earn new revenue.

They have extra large ambulances that can extricate people from accidents if need be - and are specially outfitted for the desert environment.

"The playa's very dusty, very harsh hostile environment, so we have a fleet of six advanced life support vehicles that we have designed specifically for being out on the playa to withstand some of the nasty conditions out there," says Songer.

Songer says during Burning Man their emergency room is one of the busiest in the country.
