The Gift of Life

Next week, the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary will host their annual March Community Blood Drive. Local residents are invited to stop by the West Hall Winnemucca Convention Center anytime from noon to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, to give blood. Like always, there will be cookies and juice for those who donate. That's always a fun thing, to join members of the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary for a little snack after the procedure. The pink ladies are always so nice and so generous with their praise. And for good reason. In our business, blood = life. It's pretty special that people are willing to "give the gift of life," just because they can. Many of us have been nursed back to health via someone else's blood; for some of us, that blood has literally tipped the scales from death to life. That blood gives us new chances, new life; it truly is a gift. So, if you've got about an hour next Tuesday or Wednesday, consider joining the many do-gooders in our community who quietly but so generously give that gift to us. You have to be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in reasonably good health. Those who have visited a dentist in the past 24 hours or who have taken antibiotics up to three days prior may not donate. A history of cancer in the last year or tattoos or body piercings in the last 12 months may defer a donor for a year. Donors should eat a low-fat meal prior to giving blood and bring with them personal identification: a driver's license or blood donor or Social Security card. The virtually painless process takes less than an hour. To schedule an appointment or for more information, please call Carole Doughty at (775) 623-2637 or log onto www.BloodHero.com and click "Donate Blood." Use sponsor code "Winnemucca." The Community Blood Drive is sponsored by the Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary and United Blood Services of Reno.
