Athena, You're a Star

This past weekend was a tragic one for our community and many, many hearts have been broken. But even during the darkest nights, there are still some stars that shine. One of those for us was Athena Chabino. Athena was working in Acute when she was made aware that there was a trauma victim coming into the Emergency Department. As the UC, it's her job to make sure things go smoothly, not just for the trauma patient, but for others who are in need as well. On this particular night, Athena did exactly what was needed--and more. She called other units and asked them to come to the ED to assist. She verified information, assigned jobs, showed non-ED staff where supplies were kept, and how to document in that department. And she never stopped assisting with the needs of the staff in the trauma room. When the crowds in the waiting area continued to grow, she assisted in relocating them to a different area and then asked the RN from Harmony Manor to assist with the crowd that had accumulated in the family waiting area. She retrieved Kleenexes, extra chairs and coordinated a room for the family to view the patient should that become the need. Athena was a huge help and an unbelievable comfort to both staff, and family and friends. Even though the outcome was not the one we were praying for, we want to acknowledge the love and compassion that went into the care of that patient. We cherish life. We cherish family. We cherish hope. And Athena's actions as well as those of our other staff members demonstrate that every day. Our deepest condolences . . .
