Happy to Help

Several weeks ago, HGH received a heartfelt request from the Nevada Outdoor School. Their director Andy Hart was chosen as one of the White House Administration's new "Champions of Change," and Andy was expected to attend a March 18 ceremony in Washington, DC. The problem was that the White House wasn't funding the trip, and the Nevada Outdoor School didn't have money to cover the bill. Andy was intent on accepting the award on behalf of his team, so he pulled out his own credit card. Once HGH heard about this predicament, we were happy to share some funding for the trip, not only for Andy to represent the NOS, but to represent Humboldt County and all the good that program has done here. Andy joined 14 others from across the country in receiving the White House "Champions of Change" honor. Andy, who is shown here with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewel, was recognized for being an ordinary citizen doing extraordinary things. But we don't think there's anything ordinary about Andy or about the Nevada Outdoor School. The NOS presents local youth with a variety of inquiry-based science and experimental outdoor initiatives as well as field trips, summer camps, classes and other activities--all offered at free or reduced rates to children throughout the state. It's been a great addition to our community, and we congratulate Andy and the rest of his NOS team on this amazing recognition.
