Anesthesia training program

In 2016, Humboldt General Hospital launched the Anesthesia Training Program in partnership with Midwestern University’s Glendale, Arizona campus. Students in their second year of Midwestern University's Nurse Anesthesia Program are invited to Winnemucca, Nevada, to complete one of five clinical phases prior to graduation with their Master of Science degree with a concentration in Nurse Anesthesia.

Midwestern University's Nurse Anesthesia Program includes a four-quarter didactic phase and a five-quarter clinical phase. The initial portion of the didactic phase of the program provides students with a strong foundation in the basic sciences. Students are then introduced to a series of courses that address all aspects of anesthesia equipment and anesthesia management.

The clinical phase of the program begins in the summer of the second year of the program. This provides students with the necessary hands-on experience to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential to the practice of nurse anesthesia in a variety of practice settings.

Upon arrival at HGH, students are exposed to a broad range of experiences in a rural setting, as well as specialty rotations in general surgery, orthopedics, and obstetrics.

Two board-certified anesthesia providers oversee the Anesthesia Training Program at HGH. HGH currently hosts one student for each 13-week quarter; eventually, the hospital will host two students at a time. Students are supervised at all times by one of the two anesthesia providers.

The partnership between HGH and Midwestern University is a win-win opportunity. Not only does HGH have the opportunity to provide valuable on-the-job training to a student anesthesia provider in a rural hospital setting, but having a student on-site increases the hospital's ability to provide anesthesia services at critical times at no additional cost to the hospital or taxpayers.
