In just a little over a month, Humboldt General Hospital will help sponsor LaRena's Race: the LaRena Smith Bengoa Run, Ride or Walk for the Cure. This year, the 11th annual event will take place for the first time in the morning rather than the afternoon. Race time is 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at French Ford Middle School. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. Participants may choose a 1-, 3- or 5-mile course, and anything goes, from walking to running, skateboarding . . . even driving the golf cart. The idea is simply to be part of this event that exists to help cancer victims in Humboldt County. In fact, ALL proceeds go to local victims, with the exception of 20 percent of each year's proceeds which go to researchers at "Stand Up 2 Cancer." And the message this sends to cancer victims is awesome. Those who apply for help receive about $1,000 a few days after filling out a one-page application. That is an amazing gift when bills and expenses--and fear--are staring you in the face. That's one reason HGH chooses to support this event as opposed to others, because the help is so local and so immediate. We're all about fighting cancer globally, but we're more concerned with helping our local residents fight their own personal battles right here in Humboldt County. This event becomes our way, then, to share a small moment of grace with those in need, to let them know they are never alone. So mark your calendars for May 11 and help us support our friends and neighbors in need. We can't wait to see you there as part of Team HGH.
