Bras for Education

The Rotary Club of Winnemucca is now in the bra business, and they're looking for our help. Rotary is leading the charge to collect bras for women who have been the victims of sex trafficking. Many other businesses and organizations have joined in the effort including the Frugal Flamingo Thrift Shop, Kaia Fit, Miller Law, Bella Grazia and Soroptimist of Winnemucca. The effort comes under the auspices of "Free the Girls," a nonprofit organization providing job opportunities to women rescued from sex trafficking. According to, 27 million men, women and children are currently being held as slaves around the world—more today than in any other time in history. Eighty percent of those slaves are women and girls. A large number of organizations are doing their part to rescue these victims, but once they return to a life of freedom, they have no means of livelihood and certainly no way to get an education. "Free the Girls" notes that second-hand clothing is a profitable market in many countries around the world, and bras are sought-after items. Plus, bras provide an opportunity for these women to work with other women, since they have a history of being abused and used by men. So, we encourage our staff members, our friends and our neighbors throughout the community to clean out those underwear drawers and share the new and gently used bras and camisoles that just don't work for them anymore. Let's give these ladies a chance to earn a living selling second-hand clothing while they go to school. Thanks for your help, but be sure to hurry. This community effort ends on March 31.
