Humboldt General Hospital's Employee Committee is under new leadership.
In December, the facility's 250 employees voted in a new slate of officers
for 2013 including Rick McComb, president; Timothy Benton, vice president;
Amber Beck, secretary; and Louis Mendiola, treasurer.
The committee is tasked with raising money throughout the year for an end-of-year
banquet—a massive in-house fundraising effort that allows each staff
member and a guest to attend the dinner free of charge.
And this year's new officers are committed to providing the annual
end-of-year celebration, which provides a backdrop for announcing the
"Employee of the Year," "EMT of the Year" and "Supervisor
of the Year" awards.
"It's a great time for our staff to get together in an informal,
fun atmosphere and enjoy dinner, some prizes and dancing," said McComb.
But the new 2013 officers are also looking to take the employee committee
where it has never gone before: into the community.
"We really enjoy doing things for our staff members, but our staff
members also want to help out where they can with community causes,"
said McComb, "so we are going to be a conduit for those types of
donations on their behalf."
McComb said the committee has met several times already, brainstorming
and planning how they can support staff members as they give back to the
"We have some fun sales and raffles and other fundraising events coming
up," said McComb, "and we will be sharing those opportunities
with the public."
The group is hosting a February Raffle for a Kindle Fire HD and $160 worth
of Park Cinema movies tickets.
The group has also scheduled a "Books Are Fun" book fair for
10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, February 28, and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Friday, March 1, in the hospital's Sonoma Conference Room.
Other events will follow throughout the year.
"This is a good direction for us," said McComb. "We want
to do what we can to help our community and we're excited for what
the coming year will bring in terms of those types of opportunities."
