Humboldt General Hospital's Diabetes Support Group will discuss "Travel and Diabetes Care" at its next meeting.
The group will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 6, in the hospital's Sonoma conference room.
The group is usually facilitated by HGH Dietary and Nutrition Services Director Tiffani Nalivka and HGH Wellness Coordinator Louis Mendiola; Wednesday, Licensed Dietitian Annie Drake will lead the evening's discussion.
Diabetics, pre-diabetics, caregivers and those who are interested in preventing diabetes are invited to attend.
The group's discussion will help participants create a plan to keep their diabetes in check while traveling for vacation or business.
Nalivka said that taking a trip can be stressful due to the changes in people's daily routines, including different food choices and less exercise than usual.
"These changes can affect your blood glucose," said Nalivka, "and keeping your blood glucose within your target ranges when you travel makes it more likely that you will feel better."
Nalivka said the Diabetes Support Group provides a casual setting where participants can ask questions and get information relative to their personal situation.
"With the help of many experts, we are able to deliver some very powerful education, and that education will help curb the serious and widespread impact of this disease process," she said.
