Modular Building Will House Providers During Hospital Construction

Crews are readying the site of a new modular building that will house physicians during the hospital's next expansion project.

The modular building will arrive this October; it should be ready for occupancy by mid-November—just in time for crews to begin work on the hospital's next project: the addition of a Memory Care Unit to the end of the Harmony Manor Skilled Nursing Facility.

The construction of the 11-bed unit would be the first phase of a larger project that, over the next 3.5 years, would see the expansion of the Labor and Delivery, Emergency and Surgery departments of the hospital.

The project would also include more off-street parking and a new medical office building constructed above the Labor and Delivery department that would focus primarily on the needs of women and children.

Those plans are being drawn up by CTA Architects, the same firm that oversaw the addition of a medical office building to the front of the hospital facility, as well as the more recent remodel and privatization of all acute floor patient rooms.

The Memory Care Unit should go out to bid by late 2014, with construction beginning in early 2015. Two more phases will follow, with all construction seeing completion by the end of 2017.

But first, the hospital needs a place to house Dr. Charles Stringham and visiting physicians, who will be displaced during the construction.

Additionally, an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner will join the hospital staff in November, HGH will welcome its first physician to the Rural Residency Program in July 2015, and administrators are actively recruiting a third Family Practice/OB physician to join Dr. Brad Granath and Dr. Len Perkinson.

"So the need for places to put people to see patients is becoming an imminent issue," Dr. Perkinson told members of the Humboldt County Hospital District Board of Trustees earlier this year as they considered whether to proceed with placement of the modular building.

Currently, crews are completing dirt work on the 4-acre lot at the corner of Bridge and Haskell streets. Plans call for the creation of 120 parking spaces; a full landscaping plan is also included.

The 8,000-square-foot building, which will be transported to Winnemucca from Idaho, will sit on a permanent foundation. It has been specifically designed as a medical clinic with four separate office spaces and a communal waiting room.

Humboldt General Hospital Owner Representative Mike Sheppard said the building will become the hospital's new "West Campus." He said the building's exterior and interior finishes were chosen so that the "aesthetic flavor would be in harmony with the rest of the campus."

Sheppard and HGH CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish previewed a similar building last spring in the Boise area that both said was very professional and elegant in its design and function.

"That helped us to know what we were looking at for the HGH campus," said Parrish. "At all phases of this next expansion, we want our physicians and our patients to be comfortable with their surroundings so we don't compromise in any way with our patient care."

Additionally, Sheppard said the hospital has collaborated with Nevada Department of Transportation and City of Winnemucca officials to repaint crosswalks and install flashing lights for patients and staff members who will be crossing Haskell Street from the modular property to arrive at the main hospital campus.

The modular building has the potential to be sold and moved to a new location in coming years, although hospital officials say they believe the building will become a ready addition to the existing campus, well past construction.

"We always have a need to house more physicians or more specialty clinics," said Parrish. "I don't see that this building will sit empty and unused at any time."

He added, "I know we will be always be grateful for the extra space, even well past the completion of our next three-phase project."
