'Healthy You' Presentation Will Focus on Dystonia Awareness

On Thursday, September 18, Humboldt General Hospital will present the next installment of its 2014 "Healthy Year, Healthy You" seminar series.

"Dystonia: Get the Facts" will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in the hospital's Sonoma Conference Room. There is no charge to attend and lunch will be served.

Humboldt General Hospital Wellness Coordinator Louis Mendiola will facilitate the hour-long discussion, which will put a face on the disease that affects as many as 500,000 people in the United States and Canada.

Dystonia is a neurological disorder that causes muscles in the body to spasm and contract involuntarily. The disorder can attack one muscle group or it may affect muscles throughout the body. People of all genders, ages, ethnicities and races are affected.

"We want to help raise people's awareness of this disorder," said Mendiola, "and possibly help sufferers who may not understand the cause of their symptoms."

September's seminar continues a year-long series of "Healthy Year, Healthy You" presentations aimed at helping local residents achieve a greater state of wellness.

All presentations are held from noon to 1 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month. There is never a charge to attend and lunch is always served.
