Alzheimer's Disease Workshop to Discuss Signs, Music, Trial Matches

If you or someone you know is experiencing memory loss or behavioral changes, it's time to learn the facts.

The Winnemucca Alzheimer's Support Group and the Alzheimer's Association of Reno are partnering to present an Alzheimer's Disease workshop noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, in the Sonoma Conference Room at Humboldt General Hospital.

The interactive workshop will include "Know the 10 signs," presented by local Alzheimer's activist and support group facilitator Gini Cunningham, and Alzheimer's Association Rural Outreach Coordinator Jennifer Baker.

Cunningham and Baker will show how early detection of Alzheimer's disease allows patients to begin drug therapy, enroll in clinical studies, and plan for the future.

Additionally, Cunningham will update the group on the music and memory program at Harmony Manor, Humboldt General Hospital's long-term care facility.

Not only will she discuss how songs embedded deep in memory can ease pain and awaken the fading minds of those stricken with dementia, but she has photos to share, showing the joy this music can bring.

Cunningham also plans to share information on research and trial match opportunities as well as discuss continued learning opportunities that are now available through the University of Nevada Reno and the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. To register, please call (775) 786-8061 or email jbaker@alz.org or contact Gini Cunningham via email at gini.cunningham@sbcglobal.net.
