Ortho Clinic Success Comes From Filling Local Residents' Needs

After six months and more than $2 million in revenue, hospital officials have declared their newest service line a success.

Tuesday, at the monthly meeting of the Humboldt County Hospital District Board of Trustees, CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish said the Humboldt General Hospital Orthopedic Clinic has earned a net profit of $358,332 since opening January 5.

That was reason enough, joked Parrish, to celebrate with a new tool for the practice: a clavicle plating system at a cost of just over $13,000.

Parrish said the orthopedic surgeons have performed six clavicle repairs since opening the clinic. They have actually been using the same system on loan from a Reno vendor but wished to have the equipment in-house as the vendor is not always available to bring the equipment to Winnemucca.

The purchase falls easily within the $31,000 budget set aside to purchase new equipment and tools for the practice. Bone work is very specialized, said Parrish following the meeting, “so we try to respond as much as possible to our doctors’ needs so they can turn around and help our community members.”

Clavicle repair is just one of many orthopedic procedures that was recently added to local healthcare via the new clinic.

Drs. Lud Kroner, Curtiss Mull, Bess Brackett and Glenn Miller also provide emergency fracture care, as well as treat local residents’ sports injuries, chronic degenerative conditions such as rotator cuff tears, or extremity reconstructions such as carpal tunnel, tennis elbow or meniscus repair.

All surgeries are performed at Humboldt General Hospital using the most minimally invasive techniques available.

More advanced orthopedic procedures will follow in the future if the Humboldt County Hospital Board of Trustees approves moving forward with a proposed expansion to the current surgical suite, as more advanced surgeries require more space in the operating room for specialized equipment.

“We are pleased with the success of the new ortho clinic,” said Parrish, “but I think we’re more pleased at the fact that local residents are, with few exceptions, able to receive this care right here at home.”

Humboldt General Hospital’s Orthopedic Clinic is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. An orthopedist is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergency surgical care.
