Sperry Embraces New Patient Relations Position

It took mere minutes for Jana Sperry to find her footing as Humboldt General Hospital’s Director of Patient Relations.

Since that first day in April 2015, it’s been full steam ahead—and she loves it.

“I don’t feel like I’m working because I get to interact with people and help in some small way every day,” said the South Dakota native. “This position allows me to do the things I naturally enjoy.”

Sperry can be seen walking the halls of Humboldt General Hospital with her characteristic smile that lights up for patients, visitors and staff members alike.

“She is a great addition to HGH,” said CEO/Administrator Jim Parrish. “We have seen good things since Jana came to the team.”

Sperry’s position is a new one for the facility located at 118 E. Haskell Street in Winnemucca. But when administrators saw her impressive resume, including a similar position at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, they moved quickly to not only create a new department, but to choose the perfect person to run it.

In her new position, Sperry visits with patients each day, assists with patient concerns, troubleshoots delays in care, reports compliments to each department, and manages Humboldt General Hospital’s customer service program.

In a phrase, Sperry’s job is to enhance the patient experience.

“I love working with our patients,” said Sperry, “It’s such a privilege to hear their suggestions and priorities for excellent customer service at HGH.”

Moving forward, Sperry plans to work with department managers to achieve their customer service goals, as well as provide any customer service education that might be needed.

“There are a variety of things I would like to be involved in and many opportunities to enhance the patient experience,” she said. “We have some exciting things on the horizon.”

Sperry grew up in Rapid City, South Dakota, where her immediate family still lives. Her husband Michael, a fourth-generation Nevadan, is from Reno. Together they have three dogs.

Sperry said she was attracted to Humboldt General Hospital because of the facility, people and services.

“I wanted to be a part of the good work being done in the community,” she said, “and my background in healthcare and customer service made it a perfect fit.”
