Community Invited to 'Drive Away a Hero' During July Blood Drive

Local residents are invited to shore up the blood supply this month.

The Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary along with United Blood Services in Reno will host its annual July Community Blood Drive on Wednesday and Thursday, July 27-28, at the West Hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center. Times are from noon to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday.

Between June 1 and September 5, United Blood Services is sponsoring the 10th annual “Driving for Donors” campaign. All donors, including those in Winnemucca, will be entered into the contest, and one lucky donor will win a 2016 Toyota Corolla.

The Auxiliary, one of Humboldt County’s longest standing and most respected volunteer organizations, hosts three blood drives each year. In addition to the July event, the organization hosted a blood drive last March; another drive will take place in November.

United Blood Services has a special need for type O blood, the universal donor. Less than 50 percent of the population has type O blood, but hospitals order a 50 percent supply of it.

For those who do donate blood, technicians from United Blood Services of Reno will interview donors and make the blood draws. United Blood Services provides blood to 25 hospitals throughout Nevada and northern California, including Humboldt General Hospital.

Potential blood donors are those 16 years and older who weigh at least 110 pounds and are in reasonably good health. Those who have visited a dentist in the past 24 hours or who have taken antibiotics up to three days prior may not donate. A history of cancer in the last year or tattoos or body piercings in the last 12 months may defer a donor for a year.

Donors should eat a low-fat meal prior to giving blood and bring with them personal identification: a driver’s license or blood donor or Social Security card. The virtually painless process takes about an hour.

The Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary will provide juice and cookies after donations. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call Maggie Williams at (775) 304-4804 or (775) 623-6709. Donors can speed the process by completing an online health history questionnaire at

Blood will also be tested for cholesterol. United Blood Services sends a letter for readings above 300 mg/dl. Lower readings can be checked on the UBS website.
