Humboldt General Hospital Welcomes Pediatrician Back to Hometown

The last time Veronica Janhunen lived in Winnemucca permanently was when she graduated from high school.

Now, 15 years later, she is returning to her hometown as a board-certified pediatric specialist.

Monday, August 5, Dr. Janhunen will begin the next phase of her career at Humboldt General Hospital’s Pediatric Clinic, providing well-care, sick-care and chronic-care management to children ages 0 to 18.

“I have wanted to come back to Winnemucca for a long time,” said Dr. Janhunen. “I am excited to be able to serve in my own community.”

Following her graduation in biochemistry from Linfield College in 2008, Dr. Janhunen achieved her MD through the University of Nevada School of Medicine in 2012. That was followed by a three-year Pediatric Residency at University of Utah Health.

Since 2015, Dr. Janhunen has worked in Elko as a pediatrician at Northeastern Nevada Regional Medical Center where she has served in both clinic and on-call capacities.

She also is a clinical faculty member with the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, and enjoys educating medical students during their clinical rotations.

Now as she turns her attention to Humboldt General Hospital and Humboldt County, she says she’s ready for the change.

Not only is she looking forward to being close to family, including her father, stepmother and 10-year-old stepdaughter, but she also is looking forward to reuniting with old friends and making new ones.

Plus, there are several loyal families who are planning to make the trip west from Elko to continue to see their doctor.

As one poster noted on Humboldt General Hospital’s Facebook: “No fair! We will miss you! Best Peds Dr around! We will be driving the two hours to keep you as our Dr! Glad you were able to get back home!”

HGH Interim CEO Karen Cole said recruiting Dr. Janhunen is a win-win.

“We are just thrilled that Dr. Janhunen has agreed to practice with us,” said Cole. “Not only does she get to return to her hometown, but we will have a physician who truly understands our community, its residents and how to best care for them.”

Cole added, “We feel very lucky to begin this new relationship with Dr. Janhunen and appreciate the great education, experience and accomplishments she brings with her. She truly has a desire to serve.”

Dr. Janhunen will move to Winnemucca with her husband, Robert; their children, Sage (2) and Jameson (7 months); and several pets, including four dogs, four goats, four chickens and a cat.

In her spare time, Dr. Janhunen enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and skiing. She also enjoys recreational sports such as basketball, ultimate Frisbee and softball. And, if she ever finds a moment to herself, she enjoys reading.

The HGH Pediatric Clinic is now taking appointments to see Dr. Janhunen at (775) 621-5691. The clinic is located at the hospital’s Rural Health Clinic. To reach the clinic, patients should park in the underground parking garage and take the elevator to the second floor.

Dr. Janhunen is available to care for infants, children and adolescents ages 0 to 18, including those with special needs. She also can perform circumcisions and would love to help children get up-to-date on their immunizations.
