Humboldt County's New Years Baby Arrives at Humboldt General Hospital

Arely Hernandez is the first baby of 2019 in Humboldt County.

The beautiful little girl made her entrance at 5:58 a.m. Tuesday, January 1—long before she was expected to arrive.

Mom Karina Carrillo said she wasn’t due until January 20, so when she began experiencing contractions at about 8:30 p.m. New Year's Eve night, her family didn’t take her seriously at first.

“They said I was being dramatic,” laughed Karina. Plus, her mother said she would have to wait to go to the hospital until midnight, after the family was able to share their New Year’s wishes.

Karina knew she was in labor, though—a fact the nursing staff at Humboldt General Hospital confirmed upon her arrival at the Mother and Baby Unit at approximately 12:30 a.m. New Year’s Day morning.

Just about five hours later, little Arely made her entrance. She weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces, and was 20 inches long.

She joins her 10-year-old brother Angel and 2-year-old sister Alianny at home. Maternal grandparents are Eulalia and Hector Carrillo of Winnemucca.

Arely was delivered by Dr. Len Perkinson.

While the new mom admits she was hoping for a boy—“boys are much easier and girls need a lot of attention”—she is thrilled with her new miss.

Karina has many hopes and dreams for her daughter, but for now she is simply praying Arely will be healthy and strong.

She is also enjoying Arely’s special moment as Humboldt County’s first baby.

Arely will enjoy a bounty of gifts from area organizations and businesses that did their part to celebrate the first birth.

The OB nurses at Humboldt General Hospital, led by Monica Sartor, RN, shared gifts for the new baby and mom along with The Martin, Khoury’s Market, Papa Murphy’s, Rice Jewelers, Simply Trendy, Real Deals, Shore Line, Second Street Seasonals, Chihuahua’s, Java Town, The Griddle, Allure Salon, Flex Fitness, Zion Lutheran Church, The Flying Pig, Nature’s Corner, The Shirt Shack, Ron’s Seed and Supply, Spare Time Bowling, Kat Hall/Essential Oils and More, Frontier Community Action Agency, Ladybugs and Lilypad’z, Marissa Mendoza/All About You, Enchanted Moon and Imagine That.

Nurse Monica Sartor, who also owns Lucky Shot Photography, provided a beautiful mini photo shoot of the new baby. The Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary also has a special check to present.

While Karina said she was secretly wishing Arely would come before the new year, she agreed the bountiful outpouring from the Humboldt County community has certainly made Arely’s January 1 birth a one-of-a-kind event.
