HGH 'Fit Kids' Program Designed to Get Kids Moving

For the fifth year in a row, Humboldt General Hospital is hoping to get kids moving over the summer.

The facility, located at 118 E. Haskell Street, has announced the return of “Fit Kids,” a fun summer program for kids ages 3 to 12.

The program will include five events over the summer—all designed to get kids off the couch and into healthy activities.

Humboldt General Hospital Wellness Coordinator Billie Lucero said the program is meant to be engaging, but she’s also hoping youth will leave with lifelong health lessons as well.

“This is all about the kids having fun,” said Lucero, “but it’s also about teaching kids what fitness means, and how they can begin now to make fitness a very important part of their lives.”

The summer schedule will include:

  • 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, June 27: “Fit Kids” Kickoff and Car Seat Checkpoint near the Splash Pad at the Winnemucca Recreational Complex. Fit Kids will welcome the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada Highway Patrol, Winnemucca Police Department, Grass Valley Fire Department, Winnemucca Rural Fire Department and Winnemucca Fire Department. Plus, HGH EMS Rescue’s “KISS” (Kids in Safety Seats) program will offer a free car seat checkpoint. Kids will enjoy an obstacle course, and they should be prepared to get wet!
  • 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, July 11: Zumba for Kids at Highland Park.
  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 18: Bowling at Spare Time Bowling Center. Limited to the first 72 kids to show up. Participants should bring socks; shoe rental is included.
  • 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 25: Nature Bingo at Vesco City Park.
  • 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, August 1: Swimming and BBQ at Memorial Pool. Participants should bring a swimming suit. The first 100 kids to show up get in.

Lucero said kids will receive one raffle ticket for every event they attend.

“Then on August 1 at our final event, we’ll hold a drawing and give away brand new bikes to one boy and one girl,” she said. Kids must be present to win.

Parents and/or guardians must chaperone their youth at each event. Pre-registration is not necessary, and there is no charge to attend.
