Dr. Subha Rajan loves rural family medicine. Perhaps the only thing she
loves more is obstetrical medicine.
In Winnemucca, she is excited to combine both passions in what she hopes
will become a long-standing medical practice at Humboldt General Hospital.
The Family Practice Obstetrics physician began her new position April 27.
She says she was drawn to both Winnemucca’s small-town feel and
the modern amenities at Humboldt General Hospital.
“I hope to expand my OB practice and have the chance to truly connect
with and care for families,” said Dr. Rajan. “Winnemucca and
HGH seem the perfect place to help me realize those two goals.”
Most recently Dr. Rajan has served as the assistant medical director for
the Theda Care system in New London, Wisconsin.
She also completed residency and fellowship training at the University
of Tennessee Health Science Center, where she was named chief resident
and outstanding graduate of the year.
The board-certified Family Practice physician grew to love obstetrics in
Bangkok, Thailand, where she was a physician at a refugee center, providing
care to women and children.
Dr. Rajan pursued her interest in women’s health and maternity care
by achieving advanced medical training in surgical, high-risk and other
aspects of pregnancy.
She received her medical degree from Calicut Medical College in India and
earned master’s degrees in both clinical tropical medicine and public
health at Mahidol University of Bangkok.
Dr. Rajan has a special interest in preventive medicine as a way to bolster
an entire community’s health.
“When you concentrate on a single individual, you treat his or her
symptoms, but perhaps the underlying issue is still there,” she said.
“But when you concentrate on treating that individual’s family,
and helping them grow together in their health maintenance and prevention,
then you can begin to transform individuals, families and even communities.”
Dr. Rajan is looking forward to making that kind of difference in Winnemucca.
“I love rural communities and the potential to truly make a difference,”
she said. “I am not only hoping to promote greater overall health,
but I am most excited to become part of the community.”
Dr. Rajan is board-certified by the American Academy of Family Physicians.
She is certified in advanced cardiac and obstetrics life support as well
as neonatal resuscitation.
In addition to English, she is fluent in Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil. Her
husband will accompany her to Winnemucca. Together they enjoy running,
biking and staying fit, as well as spending time with their 21-year-old son.
Dr. Rajan provides full spectrum family practice and obstetrical care,
from prenatal to end of life. To make an appointment, please call (775)
