Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need an appointment?

A: There are only two tests that our lab performs that require an appointment: Paternity test collections and glucose tolerance testing. Otherwise, lab tests are performed on a walk-in basis.

Q: What if I want to have a blood test but I don't have a physician?

A: A physician's order is required for any Laboratory testing. To find the right physician for you, please visit Find a Provider.

Q: Do I need to check in at the hospital admit desk each time I visit?

A: Yes. In order to keep an accurate record of your tests and visits, we require that all patients check in and register each visit with us. This is important for insurance purposes as well.

Q: Do I need to stop taking medications before a blood draw?

A: Please consult with your health care provider regarding any medications you might be taking before having lab work done.

Q: My paperwork says I should be fasting. What does this mean?

A: For fasting blood work, do not eat or drink anything except water for 8-12 hours before your blood draw. Also, please refrain from chewing gum or using tobacco products.

Q: Should I fast before my test?

A: Your health care provider should instruct you about what you should and should not consume before your lab tests. If you're not sure, please check with your health care provider, or call the Laboratory at (775) 623-5222, ext. 1560, for information.

Q: Can I receive a copy of my results?

A: All patients have the right to receive a copy of their test results. You will first have to sign over authorization to us so that our Medical Records Department may provide you a copy.

Q: When will my health care provider receive the results of my test?

A: This depends on the nature of the tests. Some tests can produce results within a few hours while others take days to complete. Regardless, you can rest assured your health care provider will be notified of the results immediately.

Q: Will someone explain my Laboratory results to me?

A: Your health care provider will interpret your lab results and discuss what they mean for your health. We provide general information on Laboratory test results at

Q: How much of my blood will be drawn for my tests?

A: Testing only requires a small amount of blood. To better understand how much blood is taken for a test, consider that the human body contains roughly 1,344 teaspoons of blood. The typical tube we use to draw blood holds about one teaspoon. As you can see, even if you require multiple tests, very little is drawn for Laboratory purposes.

Q: How much will my Laboratory test(s) cost?

A: Please visit with one of Humboldt General Hospital's Patient Access representatives. They can help you understand how much each lab test will cost, what your insurance will pay, and what your out-of-pocket expense will be. If you don't have insurance, your representative can check to see if you qualify for any funding programs. Please call (775) 623-5222, ext. 1130, to speak with a Business Office representative.
