Maternity care

When it’s time to welcome a new baby into your family, highly skilled maternity care experts at Humboldt General Hospital are ready to make your birthing experience special. We love babies and taking care of new parents.

Our approach is family-centered. Your partner or support person is included in your birthing experience. They can stay at your side throughout the birthing process.

Our highly trained maternity team

Our pregnancy and delivery team includes board-certified OB-GYNs, family medicine obstetrics doctors, and certified nurse-midwives. The team also includes nurses who are certified in obstetrics or maternal and newborn care.

Our nurses enjoy helping new parents learn about their baby. We will answer your questions to help you feel prepared to bring your baby home.

Birthing suites and amenities

The obstetrics department at HGH has four spacious birthing suites. Each room features:

  • A birthing bed.
  • Large showers with comfortable seating.
  • An infant warmer and baby bassinet.
  • Sleeping accommodations for your support person.
  • A mountain view.

To make your labor and delivery experience as comfortable as possible, we offer:

  • Labor tubs (in two of our birthing suites).
  • Birthing balls.
  • Peanut laboring balls.
  • Heating pads.
  • Intravenous (IV) pain medicines.
  • Epidural blocks (regional anesthetics).
  • State-of-the-art, portable fetal heart-rate monitoring equipment, which allows walking during labor.

At HGH, we're committed to offering high-quality maternity care throughout your birth experience. A certified nurse anesthetist (CRNA) is available 24 hours a day to give you an epidural. If you need a C-section, the operating room is right next door. Our surgeons and care team are ready to assist in the safe delivery of your baby.

After you have your baby, you and your newborn can recover—and bond—in the same room. Your partner or support person can stay with you, and meals will be provided to them. Lactation support is available to help you get started with breastfeeding, if you choose to breastfeed.

Since most babies are born healthy and full-term, we have a Level 1 nursery. But should your baby be born early or ill and require a higher level of care, we arrange transport to the region’s finest medical centers.

Visitation

OB visitation hours after delivery are 9 am to 11 am and then again from 6 pm to 8 pm. We want to allow you time to rest and bond with your newborn.
