Memory Care
Quail Corner Life Enrichment Community
Alzheimer's disease is one of the most devastating forms of dementia,
affecting 5.3 million Americans. It is the sixth leading cause of death
in the country overall, and the number of people affected by Alzheimer's
is projected to double in 10 years, and more than triple to 16 million by 2050.
In Nevada, 29,000 people over age 65 were living with Alzheimer's in
2010, a number expected to grow to more than 35,000 by 2020. Humboldt
General Hospital is aware of these sobering statistics. We are also aware
that many of our community’s residents will not remain untouched
by Alzheimer’s, or other progressive impairment.
That’s why Humboldt General Hospital has opened the Quail Corner
Life Enrichment Community, a new community within our hospital where residents
can receive memory care right here, close to home.
Memory care is a distinct form of long-term skilled nursing that specifically
caters to patients with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and other types
of progressive impairment. Memory care communities usually provide 24-hour
supervised care within a separate wing or floor of a residential facility
that is designed to minimize wandering behavior.
For many years, Humboldt General Hospital has had to send all memory care
patients out of area to receive care. In 2013, the hospital unveiled a
plan to expand the Harmony Manor Skilled Nursing Facility to include an
11- to 13-bed memory care community. This expansion means that most local
families will now be able to keep their loved ones close by, with the
specialized care they need.
